  1. lmao this is why I dont like VGC or Smogon formats. With all that sleep clause and swagger clause and now, the banned pokemon more than the allowed ones? yeah I’ll stick to casual online battles

    Reply
      • I’ve only seen mega mewtwos and charizard in battlespot, I think I’ll be fine plus I have a Meganium with aromatherapy anyway.

        Reply
        • Go on ranked battlespot (when it gets back online, BTW, since there’s no more ranked in gen 6) and you won’t see mewtwo, and more focused strategies, particularly as you score even higher.

Eventually you will wish clauses (other than mythical/box legends clause) existed like in Stadium or Pokemon Battle Revolution. Heh heh heh.

          Reply
    • Still so much better than seeing the same thing over and over again. With do any Pokemon now available, limited formats are the only way to make the game fun.

      Reply
  2. Well that’s certainly a lot of Pokemon excluded from the VGC lol I guess people will have to rely on Pokemon that aren’t typically common. At least the Kami trio are out and the Weather trio are out too. People will have to start coming up with more interesting teams than relying on the same old same old. That’s a good thing I think. lol

    Reply
    • Yeah, the meta will be pretty interesting for the first, let’s be generous, four months. After that big six will be established and common knowledge and it will break down to big six and anti big six like it always does.

  3. Welp, I’ll be sticking to Smogon and similar stuff, thank you very much. I was worried for a moment but then I realised I never played VGC so why should I even care? I’m kind of sorry they’ve limited the availability pool so much though, it’s pretty shitty.

    Reply
    • Why be sorry? It’s for one year. Makes things interesting. And it’s not like people can’t play VGC and Smogon if they want a different pool of Pokémon.

      Reply
      • Fair enough, but I’d be really frustrated if I couldn’t use a lot of my favourites from previous regions in official settings. I think heavily limited choice sets can be really fun, but should be limited to seasonal competitions as they have been in the past. As you say though it’s only a year, and frankly it’ll probably be more interesting than watching teams dominated by primals and megas rayquaza…

    • The dex limitation is basically Alola dex.

Do you remember VGC ’14, which is Kalos dex? That was one of the best metagames ever, honestly. It’s the one with the Pachirisu world champion.

      Reply
      • Yeah, I’m not particularly surprised as they did this last gen, but the dex is smaller than last time, and it kinda clashes with the 20 year celebration shindig IMO. In any case it’ll be better than this year’s facepalm format choices.

  4. Can’t wait for Tail Glow Xurkitree oh boy

Also if you guys didn’t know, Water Bubble (The ability on Araquanid) doubles the base power of water moves, as well as preventing burns.

    • No CHALK. No Primals. No Ubers. No Mega Mawile. No Mega Mence. No Mega Kanga (still a beast at 1.25x.) Thunder Wave and Paralysis nerfed. Talonflame nerfed to hell…

Those UBs yeah. Also we may need to wear sunglasses watching/playing VGC because of all the terrains!

      Reply
      • I wish the Dex was at at least 400-450, 300 seems way too less. But it should work.
No Ludocolo and Kingdra for rain abuse either.
Yeh, I imagine most strategies will revolve around the Tapus and their terrains.

        Reply
        • We’ll see. Kalos Dex was diverse enough, almost any Pokemon can do well.

I think hail, or at least Alolan Ninetales, will have a presence here.

Hail+Aurora Veil+Tapu Lele to protect A. Nintetales from Bullet Punch might be happening.

Rain Teams might be a thing though! Politoed is available, Araquanid and Toxapex and Scizor might appear. Tapu Fini to cancel Psychic Terrain so Scizor can Bullet Punch people left and right. Lanturn for Thunder.

          Reply
          • I’m betting that Drizzle Pelipper with access to U-Turn, Hurricane, and Roost are more popular than Politoed.

          • Possible… but Politoed doesn’t have a 4x weakness. And this is the gen where staying on the ground might be a positive this time.

Still, Pelipper might be a not half bad option to consider for a non-terrain rain team and if not using Mantine. Or even both on a team since there’s a chance rain needs to be reset. (Opponent switches in Ninetales to remove rain, but Pelipper U-Turns to Politoed who puts the rain back.)

    • You can’t obtain Regular Rattata in the game at all, and iirc it needs to come from a copy of Sun and Moon so most likely you won’t be able to use Regulars

      Reply
      • Ok but, consider when Bank is useable. If you transfer a Rattata and then Breed it, the egg will Hatch in Alola. Will THAT be Legal?

Obviously regular Raichu, Exeggutor and Marowak will be unobtainable.

        Reply
      • Well as you’ve shown in the above method, regular (“Kanto”) formes can be bred in Alola now. I now wonder about the legality of that, because I can see competitive uses for non-Alolan Raichu.

        Reply
        • Well yeah but the response was made before we knew that was a thing

And its still possible to ban Non Alolans, but I doubt it

          Reply
          • I doubt they will make a complex ban like that, so I expect to see non-Alolans if they might perform better in teams (e.g. Drought Ninetales, post-bank)

    • I was just about to make a comment about this. Very happy about this! Now if only there is a way to obtain normal Raichu, Exeggutor, and Marowak.

    • Why not. Most legendary pokemon are legal since their stats aren’t brokenly high. It was kind of assumed they would be legal once we knew their stats.

      Reply
    • Actually, this gen is pretty balanced TBH.
The only real “quickban worthy” mons are Kartana and Pheramosa

The rest are either fair or already banned

      Reply
      • Honestly I would probably knock Pheramosa off the ban worthy list as well given his terrible defensive stats. It might be strong and fast, but it seems all but guaranteed to be OHKO’ed by nearly anything in competitive play, and honestly given this generation’s favoring bulk over speed, it might honestly struggle in VGC.

        Reply
      • Karatana is a rough type match up for my tentative team. It single handedly is causing me to consider running Nature’s Madness / Tapu-Z on my Tapu Koko. Well that and Metagross.

  7. I have a few questions about Trainer Customization for those who got the *ahem* “early access” game.

Is it possible for a male trainer to be shirtless? I personally prefer being shirtless myself, and when I saw the male trainer battling the Trial Wishiwashi school form in one of the trailers, I noticed he was shirtless but had the pokeride vest on for surfing and I couldn’t help but be hopeful. I was also wondering, are sandals or flip flops possible? And, finally, can I cosplay as Team Skull?

  8. UBs and Tapus are gonna dominate the meta I’m guessing. People might build their teams around Terrains sort of like Trick Room or Weather teams.
