  1. Can we just take in the idea that if the starters really are fake the artist who drew them is REALLY talented? Like the drawings are super good.

  2. So as a huge fan of Pokémon conquest, id really like if all of the official art for each Pokémon got updated to be in powerful, dynamic stances like they were in that game. Seeing samurott, chesnaught, serperior, and delphox look so stiff is kinda irritating.

  4. What I would want for the Leaks’ designs:
Grass/Rock Cave bear (extinct species) (the starter hides in a cave)
Fire/Steel bipedal cyborg/terminator like horse with some sort of blaster on its hoof or head (as an unicorn horn)
And I have two ideas for the water
Water/Dark humanoid, with internet culture themes sprinkled in (it argues and gets angry, it likes to mock others, but it’s also sad inside)
or Water/Ghost. I have no idea for what it could be, but that typing just feels right for it

  5. So besides starters, region theme, and legends, who’s thinking of going into gen 8 relatively blind? I’m considering it so it brings me back to my childhood of going into gen 3 and 4 blind but I don’t know if I have the self control to not watch trailers and look at leaks!

  6. I’m quite scares about those supposed leak. The water starter is cool but not that water type in design. The grass one is too standar like (the chespin/oshawott/piplup zone) and the fire one just screams fighting type with that punching-like nose

    Reply
  7. My guesses for starter types even if the leak included them and they’re irrelevant

    Bear
Grass/Electric based on its bioluminescence (and the leaker’s type)
    Grass/Dark based on bear stereotypes
Grass/Rock combining the bear and its cave

    Horse
Fire/Steel based on mechanical transport (such as bikes) combined with horses (maybe even a horse and carriage/chariot fusion) (and the leaker’s type)
Fire/Flying based on a pegasus (would be our first pegasus mon, but may be an issue because Charizard)
Fire/Fairy based on a unicorn (may be deemed too similar to Rapidash)
Fire/Fighting based on the best type

    Coral
Water based on the fact it’s hard to give it another type (and the leaker’s type)
Water/Ghost based on coral bleaching – although the coral isn’t actually dead whilst it does this, it can die if it does it for too long and rids of its symbiotic relationships. Could also be a pun on ‘white as ghost’ or ‘wight’ as in dead.
Water/Rock because coral (may be deemed too similar to Corsola)

      • I mean how would you account for the grammar errors on the page then? I love these designs, but I can’t get past. If the grammar was correct or at least made a little more sense then I’d be all on board, but it doesn’t look like ti is. I can’t believe GF would frame concept art that would have grammar errors instead of just fixing it before framing.

        Reply
        • Apparently the Alola starter leaks had grammatical errors as well. And, well, if you’re framing concept art you care more about the visuals than the art.

          Reply
          • Did they tho? Iirc the text was too blurry to fully read it all and the stuff they could read was more or less fine. Do you have any examples? I’d like to jog my memory if this is the case.

          • No because I don’t tend to remember obscure details of leaks from years ago, it’s just heresay from what I’ve heard

          • Apparently like “view front” instead of “front view” on the horse page and apparently using different tenses for the water starters page when referring to it being happy and mad. It could be stuff that’s neglegible, but I’m not so sure.

          • I wouldn’t say ‘view front’ is terribly incorrect grammar because it’s not grammatically incorrect from what I can tell. It’s a command (‘view the front’) rather than a label (‘this is a view from the front’), which is important because concept art is there to show how something works – in this case, directing the artist to look at the front of the ‘mon to see what it’d look like with another perspective. For example, its ears look totally different from the side, whilst the front shows how they’re actually laid out.

Tenses are also really minor because the person looking at the art will know what it means. Also, considering the fact that only one visual shows it with a part of it broken, it’d make sense if they’re treating it as an individual – ‘this is how it has/will act in this scenario’ and then ‘this is how it is acting in this scenario’.

Then again this is from an English speaker.

          • You’re not wrong that in English it’s not a deal breaker, bit in Japanese where each set of characters are used very specifically it seems a bit odd that someone that is Japanese would make mistakes like that. Especially if it’s supposed to be professional work. They could be real, but I’m just not sure

          • Concept art is no stranger to grammar errors. Most English concept art I’ve seen is very light on words and it’s not uncommon for it to be unclear or even outright erroneous. They could obviously be fake but I don’t think the grammar is a be all end all

          • Yeah, but that’s English. The Japanese language is very specific and often uses different characters to depict context rather than using general words to do it. That’s why English and Japanese are so very different.

          • Grammar mistakes happen in any language. Heck, for all we know the incorrect Japanese could be because they’ve got foreigners working on the concept art. They wouldn’t be the first Pokemon made by a westerner.

    • I guess they wanted Mercer for Super and FighterZ to match that. It happens, it might be Roberts had other projects or something else too.

      • True. Reminds me of how regular Lucina was voiced by Laura Bailey in FE Heroes, but every other variant of her was voiced by Alexis Tipton. Tipton does an amazing job at replicating the voices of characters Laura Bailey has voiced that she couldn’t voice that time for whatever reason. I’ve only heard her as Lucina and Kid Trunks, but she’s really good

  9. Im gonna take a crack at these leaks:

    Grass starter:
Grass/ Electric: (per the rumors). The lighting up of its fur to scare away predators is genius. Plus, I’m intrigued that we could potentially get a slow electric type (since despite bears reaching pretty fast speed irl, they aren’t generally known as fast animals).
Grass/ Dark: what with the cave in its concept art. Though the bear doesn’t seem too evil in its design. Or even scrappy at all (per Pancham).
Grass/ Psychic: with the whole “creating illusions” idea. As it evolves, it harnesses its psychic powers to create more powerful illusions.

    Fire starter:
Fire/ Steel: (per the rumors). I liked the earlier suggestion about the chariot fusion. Though a steel saddle, or even like a chrome pipes theme (horsepower anyone?) could be cool.
Fire/ fairy: If it’s gonna be a pegasus, this could be really a really cool typing for a mythical/ mystical creature.
Fire/ ground: idk, i know Earthen would hate to have this not go with a bull starter, but a horse kicking up lots of dust around it and with desert mustangs existing irl, this could go a really cool direction (however mudsdale in gen 7 might make this redundant).

    Water starter:
Water: (per the rumors). I’d be disappointed if this was the only monotype this gen, since it looks like it has so much potential. I have a hard time deciphering what it even is, though I’ve heard coral as its inspiration floating around here. We’ve also had a lot of water monotype starters so let’s keep up the interesting type combos.
Water/ ghost: it reminds me a lot of Phantump. It’s eyes are creepy yet cute, which is perfect for a beginner ghost.
Water/ ice: its small enough it kinda reminds me of krill, bacteria, plankton, etc. and a lifeform stuck in the ice would be really cool. Plus how have we not had a water/ice starter yet?

      • Idk dude never say never. The patterns people read into in these games never are 100%. I mean typhlosion is already kinda going against that pattern, but just barely. I mean this goes with anything, not all of the regional birds have three stages, we had two electric mouse pokemon in gen 3, and we had a split evo regional bug in gen 3. We’ve had three fire/ fighting types in a row, we’ve had a starter’s first form with a dual typing (bulbasaur and rowlet). There are no true patterns in pokemon, and some patterns are broken in a later gen.

        Reply
          • And that changes the fact they broke a pattern… How? The only other Pikaclone with a gimmick is Dedenne promoting Fairy

          • Pachirisu won a tournament, Emolga made Elesa’s gym a living *bad place*, and Togedamaru’s gimmick is that it is the best one.

          • I could agree with Pachrisu, but Emolga is a Flying pikaclone and Togedemaru is a metal pikaclone. Doesn’t mean they’re bad, they are more than just a gimmick, but they are *blank* Pikaclones

          • Those aren’t gimmicks. That’s like saying Primarina being fairy is a gimmick. It’s not. It’s part of its design lol

          • There was no pikaclone pattern in gen 3

            Gen 1 had Pikachu
Gen 2 made a pre-evolution. That doesn’t count. (And Marill isn’t a Pikaclone you degenerates)
Gen 3 had Plusle and Minun which was to demonstrate double battles in a marketable way

The pattern wasn’t a pattern until Pachirisu

          • Got it. I mean the pikaclone pattern being a pattern that has been broken is just evidence suggesting that no pattern is safe.

          • There aren’t even really patterns.

There are always regional bugs/birds/rodents not because of some pattern but because they are easy early game fodder.

Fire Starters are never quadruped because GameFreak doesn’t like good fire type designs not because they just arbitrarily decided so.

So much of this is arbitrary bullshit that just leaves me rolling my eyes

          • Pikaclone is definitely a pattern tho. It’s been played with less than any other (regional birds and rodents have had type and evo stage played about with, we’ve had a region with no obvious single bug and they all vary a lot in power) and it’s a constant we can assume now as much as the fact we have starters.

          • The pikachu one is definitely a pattern though..there’s no way they just happen to make a non-evolving electric type rat every generation. The early bug/rodent/bird is something else entirely. Gen 5 kinda even broke this by having double bugs, double early normal types, and a dark kitten thrown in there.

          • are you seriously saying the regional bug/bird/ rodent isnt a pattern? They could literally have the first few pokemon you find be anything else. ANYTHING. but what were the first few we saw of gen 7? those three…

          • I would love for them to break it. I hate it. It’d force them to get more creative than, “hm, okay, it’s a new gen so I guess we should make another rodent that is similar to Pikachu.”

          • > Zigzag tail
            > Evo with rabbit qualities
            > Prevo introduced the Gen after

It’s the closest thing we have to Gen 2 Pikaclone and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s meant to invoke the likeness of Pikachu

          • That’s ridiculous. The only reason it’s even associated with Pikachu is the Pikablue Rumors.

If we fit every Pokémon that had similar design aspects together in groups we would be here all day

          • The Pikablu rumours were strengthened by its resemblance to it tho

And nothing else across the first two Gens that aren’t directly related mirror each other as well

  10. Just read through the entire thread. These rumors that could potentially be leaks are quite interesting. If they do happen to be leaks (by saying leaks I mean that they are actually real) which starter(s) do you think would fit Ash for in the Gen 8 Anime?

This would be a good thing for those who want the games to come out sooner rather than later if info like this is already spilling out.

The horse is a bit odd for me and its name just has a weird vibe to it

The coral is cute too, but something feels off about it

So I’d be picking the best just based on this

  18. I’m not sure why people are saying the coral starter isn’t marketable. If it was bright blue people wouldn’t be saying that I think. IT’s just because it’s a grey blue than the more traditional blue shade. I think it’s cute. It’s different looking, but it’s definitely worthy of being a water starter.

  21. I am currently fluctuating between teams. I like the coral’s designthe most but the unconfirmed mono typing is not appealing to me. The middling design for me would have to be the bear’s and I really like it’s unique typing. The Fire/Steel typing of the horse is probably the most viable one in the competitive scene but I like its design the least. As of now, with what we think we know, I would go with the Bear for my first playthrough and that is probably my favorite one.

I mean Bear could become a Cave Bear, an extinct species
Horse could become some sort of cyborg
But I have No Idea how Corall could fit present. I like the thought of the Present being partially based on internet culture, Idk how Corall boi could fit that (Maybe it’ll just be dead inside like a Big part of us)

    Reply
    • No cyborg pls

Bear – past – extinct bear monster
Horse – present – motorbike theme
Coral – future – destruction of the great barrier reef reference

      Reply
    • I don’t think they need to be that literal in order to fit the theme of past, present, and future. Plus for all we know the base stage starters wouldn’t resemble that theme to start anyway. Maybe ti’s the final evolutions that do. Or maybe it’s a mechanic that’s unique to them that makes them fit the them. Maybe even lore behind them rather than them actually physically looking like they’d represent those 3.

      Reply
    • No, if that horse becomes Fire/Steel I think it would be more along the lines of its general theme, which would be rubbing its hooves against the ground to light them on fire. It’d likely have big metal spires for legs which allows them to plant in the ground and heat them up internally. None of this makes sense but it sounds cool.
