Nintendo Direct: 9.13.2017

The long awaited Nintendo Direct is just a few minutes away from going live! We’ve been promised a 45 minute presentation about what’s up and coming on the Nintendo 3DS family of systems, and the Nintendo Switch – and we’re incredibly hopeful that we’ll be getting some new details on Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon! We’ll be updating this post with any Pokémon relevant live updates down below (be sure to refresh this post), and make posts about any heavy hitting news shortly after! Sit back, relax, and join us in the comments for today’s Nintendo Direct!

LIVE UPDATES

  • 0:40 – The Direct is starting off with Pokémon Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon!
  • 0:45 – USUM trailer is showing off lots of new footage from the games. Including new areas, and a beautiful cutscene showing Necrozma absorbing Solgaleo/Lunala.
  • 1:30 – Overview of Necrozma’s focus on the USUM story, and confirms the English names Dusk Mane Necrozma and Dawn Wings Necrozma.
  • 1:50 – “Charting New Areas of Alola” feature that shows new locations in Alola such as a beach where surfers gather (notice the new surfer NPC and Poké Ride Mantine), and a valley full of Pikachu. New clothes such as a Pikachu hat and shirt is featured as well.
  • 2:15 – The way you choose your starter in USUM is incredibly different. The three Alola starters defend you from a wild Yungoos, and you choose one shortly after.
  • 2:20 – Reminder of the event Rockruff that can evolve into Dusk Form Lycanroc that will be distributed for players who purchase the game before January 10th, 2018. If you purchase a digital version of the games before January 10th, 2018 you’ll receive 12 Quick Balls in game.
  • 2:47 – Reminder that Pokémon Gold & Silver versions are coming to the eShop on September 22nd. If you purchase either one you’ll receive a special Celebi for your SM or USUM games via code. You can pre-purchase the Virtual Console games shortly after the direct ends
  • 3:10 – NEW ULTRA BEASTS! UB Burst will be exclusive to Ultra Sun while UB Assembly will be exclusive to Ultra Moon
  • 3:40 – A gorgeous PokéBall Edition of the New Nintendo 2DS XL will be available November 3rd

  87. So I’m still not sure what the new UBs mean for Pokemon going forward…..Does this mean they really will start adding brand new Pokemon into the series mid gen or are the doing this because the UBs are only sort of considered Pokemon? Such an interesting thing they’re possibly doing.

    Hmmmm that’s the same kinda look in hgss when you talk to Pokemon you’re walking with.

    it’s probably anything from Fire, Electric, Psychic, Fairy

    Assembly
    a fortified pokemon consisting of entity of living bricks, each brick possessing a eye or mind of its own and creates a defensive shell around its body despite lacking a vulnerable internal structure, it can see everything around itself and must rearrange its segments inorder to protect itself from any manner of attacks
    possible types: Steel, Rock, Psychic, Ghost

  194. You think they added new Pokemon this time because they don’t fully consider the UBS as actual Pokemon? Like if they were considered regular legendaries they wouldn’t have introduced brand new ones mid gen? Seems like a weird place to stop. If they can introduce new UBs then what’s stopping them from introducing new Pokemon in general?

  201. Pretty neat direct. Nothing huge for me, but I can’t say I’m dissapointed.
    For the pokemon news, the new UBs look cool. I was hoping that assembly would form different shapes during battle, but it doesn’t look that way. Regardless, it looks pretty cool. I wonder if this means new regular pokemon or just a couple new UBs. Either way better than nothing, which is actually what they’ve been showing us up until now (side note: when they said “4 parts” I was hoping that they meant 4 seperate dates for new trailers). Also I wonder how time works in both of the games, random thought.
    Lyn looks like a pretty good edition to FE Warriors, but I’m still skeptical on that game.
    Xenoblade segment made the game look sorta bad honestly. The story part was neat but when they started droning on about the gameplay it went downhill. Dec. 1st though! I knew holding out hope would pay off. I really, really want to get the special edition, but it’s not like me to pay more for a few extras, though I am super excited about the game.
    The Odyssey segment wowed me! Even though it was mostly old stuff, for some reason it just clicked with me this time, so I’m a lot more hyped now for that.

    No big suprises that appealed to me, but I shoudn’t really be suprised by that. It’s a direct, not E3 or anything. Overall pretty solid, nothing huge but it filled in a few holes where it was needed (could’ve easily been like 20 minutes though).

  207. It’s a good Direct. Nothing groundbreaking, but they needed this to promote their upcoming releases for the remainder of the year and they did well at that. I expect a new Direct in late November focusing on major games for 2018.

  220. I’m excited about USUM then I was before, but I’m still not sure how to feel. this is the first Pokemon (main series) that I’ve not been full on excited for and don’t know how to feel. I just wish we knew more….Maybe the lack of info will make this the best Pokemon game ever for me hahaha

    • That’s the thing. If they announce new Alolan forms I think I will be excited because that in game story stuff I can do. finding a particular Pokemon to use in the story is more fulfilling than knowing about a post game Pokemon I’ll spend 5 seconds getting and then immediately box

  223. Anymore doubt about these being 3rd versions and not sequels? xD They will be a better Sun and Moon. If you liked Sun and Moon then you’ll love Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon. Simple as that. Mainly curious to see what the post-game is like. Hoping it’s not just Battle Tree with more returning trainers.

  226. While I get it to some degree I’m not sure I get the excitement over ganes that were made for the ps4 and Xbone coming to the Switch. They won’t look as good on the Switch so what’s there to be crazy excited about? The portability? That’s really about it…..I love the Switch, but most 3rd party games will likely not look as good in it as they will on the consoles they were meant to be played on

    • It’s portability, though I do wish Skyrim Switch allowed mods. Whiterun is hideous without them. All well, I guess if I was playing it for it to be gorgeous, I’d be a PC gamer.

      • I guess….., but I’m just not sure I get it…….Newer games that are meant for better systems (hardware and software wise) won’t look nearly as nice on the Switch (which is fine) and I think for games that I REALLY want to play I’d like them to look nice rather than have them be portable. Nintendo first party games don’t count as they’ll look good on a Nintendo system regardless.

          • But the difference is a 6 year old game. Games that are coming out now (last and this year) like Persona 5 and Doom prolly won’t look amazing. Not bad per say, but not amazing. Look at Nba 2k. It looks a little messy. I guess that’s juts my opinion on the matter tho

          • I guess, but that’s partly due to them being ports, so not developed for the Switch, and because the Switch is still underpowered compared to the competition.

  244. Idk what you guys do with your money or free time, but I collect Lego with my brothers, and I saw that they had Pokemon mega construct buildable figures (which is by megabloks I think? So they’re basically Lego) and I bought the Ivysaur and Wartortle ones and they’re actually really cool! I mean I wish Lego had snatched up the license, but if you have some extra money and like that kind of stuff, I’d definitely recommend checking them out.

  245. Was looking at everyone’s comments earlier before posting my thoughts, so here are mine:

    Overall, it’s mostly what I expected, some relayed information about Necrozma’s forms from CoroCoro was what they are. I did notice the head part of Necrozma was forged into the back of the Dawn Wings form, which was pretty interesting to see.

    Continuing on, seeing Mantine as a Ride mon was awesome. It excites me that maybe some Pokemon will replace the older Ride mons, or there will be new Ride mons for different uses (like Mantine being used for diving).

    What was a little bit shocking but a tad bit disappointing was seeing the almost same exact curscene with Hau, Lusamine, and the player. It mostly confirms not to many (or practically any) changes to Hau and Lusamine, which is a little sad. It also informs us that prob some of the plot elements from SM will be pretty similar though, but it’s kinda expected from a 3rd version.

    In spite of the SM plot mostly lingering in USUM’s, I did notice something else in the trailer. When UB Assembly (awesome design in my opinion :D) drops down, you can see not only Hala (like when Buzzwole/Pheromosa dropped down in SM) but also Hau. It’s small, but it could hint that the UB invasion this time around is actually different in terms of story, as Hau was with you when the UBs were unleashed in SM. Not only that, but also other many other big events in SM could potentially be tweaked a bit.

    Overall, I liked the information we got so far, it gets me excited for Necrozma and the UBs.

  249. So far I think Necrozma is literally just a mon in pain that needs light in order to escape its body which causes it pain. Hence why it needs the other legend

        • Also here’s some interesting information from the website that adds to your theory:
          Necrozma is a mysterious Legendary Pokémon said to be from a different world. Necrozma uses light as an energy source to stay active. It also absorbs light energy from its opponents and turns that energy into powerful lasers using the prisms in its two arms. The lasers can blast through anything. It has a dangerous nature, and rages about in search of light, but also appears to be in pain when it does so

  251. DANG… New pokémon… Actual new pokémon. I legit can’t believe it…
    This is probably the biggest surprise I’ve ever seen GF pull (I think most would agree), and it’s really a testament to how much some of their traditions are entrenched, yet they keep slowly teasing them apart, with this being the biggest shift.

    A long time ago, when USUM were first announced, I was vaguely excited this might be a possibility. Vaguely because I didn’t really believe it. I had long since given up on that, as due to GF’s recent “let’s spoil 95% of the game beforehand” policy, I surmised this game was under-advertised because it would have little new to offer, it’s depth being sacrificed for more work on the switch versions…
    I’m SO HAPPY I WAS WRONG.
    Because not only do I not believe these are the only new UBs we’ll see, I feel fairly confident supposing we’ll probably get new Alolan forms. Come on now. All we got last time was a paltry 15 or so, and A significant proportion were Jokemon. They can’t just add NEW pokémon and not a few extra forms, expanding both this gen’s pokémon “sort” additions.
    I’m gonna bet on 5 new UBs: mostly cause I think they’re going to replace all the version exclusives from SM with new ones, so each version has 4 exclusives, and I think they’ll throw at least one more into the mix (maybe 2 to replace guzzlord and Xurkitree, or maybe every UB is new here, who knows???)

    GF will probably dissapoint any reasonable estimate we might make of new content , as usual, (a big part of me is expectig them to bail on Alolan forms, but I really hope they’ll have the decency…) But still. There must be at least one or two more UBs hidden in there, and that’s really exciting.

    I really like UB:Assembly too. It’s a testament I can be excited about “these things” at all, really shows how I’ve turned around and come to embrace UBs.

    Still can’t believe how sick this is though, bring on more!

    Other thoughts: Same about smash bros, but I kept telling my brother it wasn’t happening and he took its absence a lot harder. I still think they have too much big games coming, and they’d rather wait for having a hype gap to plug to reveal it.

    Odyssey looks better and better each time. Here’s hoping there are still some big surprises left at launch though!

    Aaaugh, now I have to buy the four Zelda champions amiibos, I neeeeeeed those armours…

    • I think Kartana was seen in a trailer so not all new UBs. It wouldn’t surprise me if these 2 were the only new ones. Also I’d rather have new breedable Pokemon that I might actually be able to use in the story.

      • I would really love new regular pokémon too, but honestly, very much like this bombshell, I’ll believe that when I see it. GF has lowered by expectations too many times for me to want to get hurt again.
        And yeah, it’s completely within their pattern to just reveal these too and that be it, but meh, this is so unexpected that I’m allowing myself to dream a little bigger for this one. And really I expect there to be at least one more. I feel they simply can’t break such a tradition just for two pokémon.
