Pokémon Sun & Moon Special Battle is One-on-One

Ever felt like having 3 or 4 Pokémon on a team in official battles (singles and doubles, respectively) felt too crowded? Wanted things a little more… personal? Well Season 4’s Special Battle ruleset may be just up your alley. Although both trainers will register teams of 6 Pokémon, only one will be brought into battle for a head-to-head fight against the opposing trainer.

In this Rating Battle season’s Special format, Trainers will create a team of six Pokémon from the National Pokédex, excluding Mythical Pokémon and some Legendary Pokémon. You can use Poké Transporter to bring Pokémon into Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon from previous games. Then, when the battle starts, each Trainer will select only one Pokémon to battle with. You’ll be allowed to use items, but Mega Stones, Z-Crystals, Focus Sashes, and Eviolite will not be allowed. The battles will have a five-minute match time, a 60-second Pokémon preview, and 15-second turn times. Expect speedy battles and plenty of surprises when each Trainer’s Pokémon hits the battlefield! This may be a great time to bring in your favorite Pokémon and fight as one a la Ash & Pikachu. Season 4 will run from May 16 at 00:00 UTC until July 17, 2017, at 23:59 UTC.

I also have to say I’m loving these Special Battles, they add a fun new dynamic to online play 🙂

        • I mean more assuming that people who are assholes now will be doomed to live a crap life forever. I’ve had a lot of friends over the years who would be the sort of people that are described here and they’ve gone in different directions. One friend of mine actually kicked ass in college, maintaining a near 4.0 gpa and got a scholarship to study in pharmaceuticals and he was a jerk and one of the biggest put heads you would ever meet in High school. Another friend was similar, but ended up getting involved in petty crime and is in jail right now. Some people grow up and change, and others don’t. Its just simply kinda bleak to assume that these people are already doomed to failure in what I”m assuming is middle/high school.

          • Firstly, I have no idea how gpas are calculated because we don’t use them here, so I have no idea if 4 is good or bad.

            I don’t know how many of the people I knew in secondary school are doing now since I’ve lost contact with every last one of them, but I briefly skimmed their facebook pages a while back and if they’re true then all the assholes are doing just fine.

          • Too put it simply a 4.0 is considered an A+, perfect score. So the closer you are the better off you are. a 3.0 is considered a perfect 3, 2.0 is considered a perfect C, ect. But yeah, I’m not going to pretend that a lot of assholes don’t change. Its just that its kinda 50/50. Some people realize their horrible and grow up, and others don’t.

          • Eh, maybe.
            In my experience teachers usually just sit back and don’t do anything rather than dishing out punishments or resolving things. (Admittedly though, that worked in my favour once.)

            I still think there needs to be a better deterrent than detention. If people aren’t worried about a deterrent then it’s as if the deterrent isn’t even there and they’ll cause others grief to no end.

    Mine would have to be Mega Steelix. I absolutely love Steelix, but its mega is something I tend to forget its a thing.

          • It’s meh. As much as I think retconning all the pink things to be fairy was a bit obvious, I think Audino would fair better if they’d retconned it as pure Fairy or Normal/Fairy instead of just giving it a mega.
            That and Mawile shouldn’t have been Fairy.

That cool tail, the cool turn around pose. Even though Grass Dragon isnt the best for defensives, but it still provides nice coverage.

  33. Someone on Twitter discovered that pokemon.com/hoshi redirects to the official site, and the significance of this is “hoshi” translates to “star” in English. Later they found out that any random string ending in the letter “i” redirects to the main site, but apparently before Sun and Moon were revealed, pokemon.com/niji (niji = rainbow) also redirected to the site. Probably false hopes here but :/

    • I don’t they’d have a game reveal in CoroCoro. That hasn’t happened since Platinum. Yes technically Magearna was in a way a game getting revealed, but it really wasn’t a full reveal. They’ve done that kind of reveal before like with Zoroark, but it’s unlikely they’d do a full reveal exclusively through CoroCoro

      • I think Gokaiger is a good starting ground, it’s an anniversary series, and there tribute episodes for just about every series before it.The Power Rangers adaptation of it however… isn’t all that good.Granted, it’s trying to be like Mighty Morphin’, but it just isn’t for a number of reasons (I won’t go into them, but you can get a good gist of it from watching Linkara’s History Of Power Rangers on it.)

  48. If the new games are SM remakes or sequels, then there is definitely a possibility that they will be available on the Switch. There’s been plenty of time to make small changes and port everything over. I’m just hoping we don’t get screwed over with R/G/B remakes or some side-series titles, that would just be disappointing :/

      • There has been plenty of time if the Stars rumor is true as the rumor states that Stars was in production at the same time as SM only to be put on hold for the last few months of SM’s production so they could polish it. Thus they’d have a ton of Stars done and would only need to continue it’s production after SM’s production ended. So yes plenty of time lol

        • *If* the rumour is true, and even then at a push.
          If not, 6 months wouldn’t be long enough.

          First Nintendo has to confirm the hardware they’ll be using.
          Then they have to write device drivers (can’t use the ones that come with the hardware because consoles have non-standard OSes).
          Then they have to adapt the libraries they use (custom drawing, file io, threading, plus 3rd party libraries like SDL etc).

          Then Gamefreak can start porting their engine, which means adapting it to work with the new screen resolution, ironing out all the bugs and inconsistencies (which also means a ton of testing), and only then can they begin writing the new game. Not forgetting that this time they’ll have to remove all traces of code for drawing parallax-based 3D, and any assembly code they might have been using for speedhax (since the Switch uses an x64 instead of ARM).

          • Yes you are right about 6 months not being enough time…..but this whole thing has been about the idea that the next game would be a 3rd version for SM and the Stars rumor. So regardless of whether 6 months is enough time it’s irrelevant. The only ting we have to go on is the Stars rumor so that’s what people are talking about and basing their own theories on lol

          • Fam, Gamefreak has had access to the Switch hardware way before it was out. They’re a second party developer making Nintendo’s next system seller

          • If they hadn’t been working on SM, I’d say yeah, but the amount of work they’ve done for SM makes it highly implausible.

  49. The more I think about the more I think I’ll be disappointed if the next game is just a regular 3rd version for SM. After the past 7 year of GF saying they want to surprise their fans and have basically said they’re more or less done with 3rd versions it’d be pretty lame. I don’t mind going back to Alola as I love the region, but I want a new story. Everything seems to point to a game that would be more interesting than just a spiffed up version of SM. So them all of sudden just throwing a reg 3rd version at us all for the sake of giving us a game on the Switch seems lame. If they’re going to jump consoles half way through a gen then they need to make it worth while. I’d prolly buy a 3rd version for the Switch, but I’d feel better about spending the money on a game with a new story.

      • I don’t think we’ll ever get a Prequel. Sure prequels can be good, but for a game like Pokemon it would kind of feel useless. There wouldn’t be any surprises and they wouldn’t be able to add any new forms as then we’d be left with the question of why said forms are not in later games (continuity wise)? Also why would they suddenly then be in future games (release wise)?

          • That’s all you need to know. The point is that really when remakes come out those remakes basically take over continuity over the old games. You can still like the old games, but once a remake comes out the only games relevant anymore are those remakes and not the originals lol

          • Tbh I always just ran with the idea that the games were sequential and any changes to what Pokemon can be found in the reason are due to discovery of new regions leading to Pokemon being imported and let loose in the wild. For the most part it worked.

    • It’s corporate Nintendo that’s the asshole. Many developers don’t mind if fan games are made (as long as they aren’t making a profit), but Nintendo seems to have a problems with even nonprofit games hitting the scene. Which IMO seems ludicrous as it puts up a wall between them and their current and potential customers.

    • See that’s why I can’t get into shows like SU. If it’s not on a set schedule for me to at least record then I’ll never get caught up. It’s almost as bad for show that aren’t children shows like Brooklyn 99 and New Girl. they go a few weeks without interruption and then part way through the season they’ll be gone for a month. At least they have set times and days. Shows on cartoon Network are all over the place.

      • 5 months between episodes is insane… and there shouldn’t be a gap like that between seasons ESPECIALLY with shows that have less than 20 episodes a season like R&M. I’m re-watching all of Archer because the New Season (to Netflix) was so short… as in as long as the first season… but I digress.

        • i’ve studied so many earth abilities its not even funny
          -Earth Gliding which lets me move through solid rock as easily as a fish moves through water (which i call terraporting, but i cant figure out if the ramifications still require me to breathe)
          -tectonic rupturing to jut plates forward aka stone spikes
          -the classic elemental exoskeleton where stone and sand encase my body enhancing my physical strength and defense in exchange for mobility
          -compacting the composition of sand to made it as dense as iron
          -Geokinetic flight through repulsing magnetic fields (or just frigging ride a slab of rock like a board)
          -Earthen Camouflage by collecting nearby minerals to layer onto my body to blend in the surroundings
          -seismic sense to feel vibrations
          -Earthen healing by pulling the earth’s natural nutrients and healing my wounds (this skill is extremely hard to use in a pinch, a gradual slow heal)
          -Transmutation: ie i can destabilize solid ground to be as loose as i want, so loose that i could push you down and you’d sink into the ground like water (and for extra spite resolidify it)

    • their is also non-elemental energy… or Star/Void Elemental… which is both it’s own element and the power that becomes these elements come from and the combination of their energies combined… and Dragon… which is Genetic and can’t be absorbed unless the person absorbing it can also produce it…

          • Also if you manipulate anywhere to have no light or no darkness in it at all(trace amounts of each remain even in a totally dark room) it causes the remainder to go out of control since Light destroys everything in it’s path and spreads infinitely and darkness absorbs everything it comes across and grows infinitely… it causes a sort of annihilation effect

          • Darkness and light aren’t alignment… Evil is an alignment and can create corrupted versions of the regular elements. Good doesn’t have such a thing but people with strong wills and emotions are much stronger than normal due to the way magic works in this universe…

          • And don’t get me started on Godly Power… which the Gods and Goddesses or Nere have… Nere being personifications of the fabric of Reality like Time and Space or Life and Death.

            in most rpgs or fiction light and shadow are the holy elements good and bad

          • In this they aren’t… Darkness even has a branch of magic that specifically punishes those who do “evil” and don’t give a damn about the consequences of what they’ve done

          • as long as you can feel bad about it your alignment is the “good” or “neutral” one… although it’s mostly about things like murder and shit.

          • aside from shadowy tentacles and blades what else
            there’s shadow mimicry where you’re body is enveloped in the darkness giving you ghostly abilities mostly moving as a shadow and solid objects phasing through you
            Shadow absorption, you steal/draw in all existing shades to empower your own, objects and people without their shadow slowly lose power something to do with the dark side of your chi (from this one episode of jackie chan adventures)
            also a personal best
            Shadow Marionette- aka using your shadow to control people like a puppet

            you can travel through shadows (not entirely true but each shadow could be a gateway to the realm of darkness, a parallel world opposing the light world

          • well phasing through stuff in this world is mostly accomplished by going into a subspace which is audio-visually overlaid on regular space… and becoming tangible by phasing partially back later.

    • Oh and Water and Wood and Metal can Manipulate blood… but only your own or that of someone who’s been dead for up to a few days or has been removed from the body for a while because a person’s soul which generates Energy which is used to cast spells and break physics by creating matter irradiates it with your signature… also strong mages don’t need a lot of armor since the soul creates the aura which has an aura-y layer around you but also a super thin clothing-tight layer that diffuses damage from attacks and other impacts… like being hit by a truck. also at some point the soul crystalizes and you can take it out of you which makes your body never age or rot but if you aren’t in contact you’re basically disembodied and in a coma… also you get one power called a soul gleam which there are a lot of but are not unique… people also have aura types of the ten elements (or dragon) which is the element you start off being more proficient at using.

    • Kalos started sucking for me around the badlands where I noticed the sudden lack of variety… seriously how did they manage to put all of the variety into just route 1.

        • Kalos really failed to me because after the second gym almost every town was the next gym with a few short routes between them and you never had to backtrack. in Kanto you at least had to go around the saffron roadblock and fight a bunch of rockets to do stuff.

    I started off by killing the Rito divine beast. It’s probably my favorite so far and has the special ability I’ll use the most. I grabbed the bow and looked over to see a waterfall in the distance. So of course… I go to it. I find this camp of monsters and one of them has this awesome boomerang. I tie an octorock balloon to a bomb and hit it with a korok leaf and send them flying. It was awesome.

    I had some soul orbs I didn’t cash in so I filled up my Stamina to the max. 😀

    I bought a bunch of furniture for my house and did more quests and shrines and shrine quests. I went exploring a bit and eventually came across a white horse I actually needed for a quest. I named her Princess and got her the royal armor 😀

    I filled up a bunch of the Hyrule Compendium (and bought quite a bit of it too) and came across Papyrus the skeleton horse. You guys know how that ended…

    Trying to recover, I went out to finish up some more quests. I didn’t realize there was one more korok trial I had to do so I went ahead and finished it up. I just wish I got more than just a diamond.

    At this point it had been 5 hours of exploring so I decided to look for a memory to end it off. So I chose one in Hyrule Castle because I’m an idiot and it looked like the location would be easy to find and get to. It was not. I ate so much food because of all of the guardian turrets. I came close o death multiple times. I blindly walked into a small room with a purple lynel in it, panicked, and crawled out spooked.

    Hyrule Castle is huge though. Like it’s unbelievable how much there is to see in just that one area. It’s beautiful at sunrise too. When you aren’t being targeted by guardians that is. I accitdentally walked into a boss fight and had to close the game and load to a save I made right before walking in there. I didn’t find the memory but it was cool seeing what was in store.

    • I just climbed one of the pillars outside the castle (took a detour around the castle but that’s Guardian free. Saved, then jumped from the pillar to one of the towers. Just climbed that one and I was already in Zelda’s study :). Memory is not that hard if you are smart.

  73. Nintendo America and Nintendo Co. Ltd have both completely removed the Pokemon Direct 2016 from their Youtube channels. However, the one from September 2013 (right before XY release) is still on it.

    Fun fact: 2011 is thus far been the only year where there has been no Pokemon news in May at all. Safe to say chances are very, very high we’re getting something soon

          • Here’s some stuff on mine:The main characters are Alex (a Riolu, and yes, he’s supposed to be me) and Sam (a Treecko).Both used to be human and have been brought to the world for some unknown reason.The two end up joining a guild run by an Infernape.It’s not all sunshine and rainbows, though.It’s not an entirely dark series though, since there are some funny moments (And even a 4th wall break or two).I haven’t come up with a design for the main villain, so that’s a problem.

      • Hopefully. at this point it seems like all we’re missing is a direct announcement. It does make you wonder what they have planned. Why remove these directs now if the replacement wouldn’t be going up for a while? Makes me think we’re on the precipice of them them announcing it soon. I really just want it to be today so we can be once and for all sure it’s a Pokemon direct or not. I think it will be, but I don’t want to get over excited about something that ends up being a direct for them to get all the tiny stuff out of the way before e3.

    • Honestly we’ve been putting this announcement on our own time, but it could even come later than we think. If the direct will be for not only us, but also Japan(obviously) then they may wait and announce it at a time when Japan is in waking hours. They’ve announced stuff in the morning for Japan before so it wouldn’t be all that surprising if we got an announcement tonight( for us)
