    • I get ya. While I have friends to talk nerdy stuff about for sure, I don’t really have anyone in particular that I can just gush over stuff with. I can do it with my brother, but mostly we just listen to each other talk about nerdy stuff because nobody else would put up with our shit hahaha

        • Yep, yep. I began the game on release date, and I likely won’t finish until late next week. I’m far from completing everything, but I think I’m close to doing everything I want to with the game.

          • I’m a bit distracted because I need thirty of these stealth fish guys so I can get my Sheikah Armor to level 4… but now I’m distracted by the Korok trials… and then I need to get another heart to get the Master Sword… then I still have two more divine beasts to do and there is an island I want to find and…

            god, this game is insane

          • I’m in the middle of my Eventide island quest, this part of the game is so fun. I killed a hinox using nothing but bombs and a rock.

          • One of the most frustrating thing to me in some games is when I do a side quest but that opens up 3 other side quests and it just keeps giving me more. BotW is the definition of that but it’s so engaging and perfect and I don’t know why.

      • Size as in physical dimensions or size as in memory density?
I’m not actually sure about that point, I’ll have to check since I don’t work with discs very often.

Modern cartridges do indeed have faster read speeds.
It’s marginally debatable because the data on discs can be cached, which makes the cached part of data as fast as the memory it’s written to.
If it’s not in cache though, it has to be written to cache, which is slow, so debate over – discs are lame.

        • Physical dimensions, should’ve been more specific. 😛
But yeah, it would be awkward to have a disc drive on a portable.

          Reply
          • It depends on the disk size. The PSP did quite well as far as using discs for portable things, but the size will limit the memory density:
A PSP disc can hold 1.8GB (if dual layered) and is 64mm wide.
Your standard SD card is 32mmx24mm and can hold up to 128GB.
The Switch cartridges (not sure what size they are) can hold up to 32GB.

          • That’s tiny. No wonder they had to give them the weird coating.

I would have been tempted to put a larger case around them just to make them harder to loose, even at the expense of requiring a larger port.

    • AHEM *resident programmer*

Reason 1: Random Access vs Sequential Access

Disks have to be spun so they tend to be accessed sequentially, whereas cartridges are flash memory, which admittedly still has to be accessed in blocks, but it can be memory-mapped so it’s easier to interface.

      Reason 2: Custom Peripheral Modification

Disks are stuck being plain old disks.
Cartridges can contain other devices like extra RAM (DS Browser Memory Extender), small processors, gyroscopes (Like in the Wii motion plus), light sensors (Very rare GBA games I can’t remember the name of), motors (GBA Rumble Pak).

      Reason 3: Nostalgia

Admit it, cartridges are more nostalgic.

      Reason 4: Proprietaryness

It’s easier to region lock Cartridges because you can do it in-hardware rather than in-software, so clever programmers can’t trick the system into ignoring the region locking. Clever hardware engineers still can though.

        • They have, but I was just listing general reasons.
They probably removed region locking precistly because of the workarounds I mentioned (never forget the old Gamecube DIY Region Switch trick).

          • Pricing depends on the number being manufactured and whether you’re using a public standard or a proprietary standard (which is why so many things use USB and SD these days, although not all obey the standard properly).

As for whether other companies follow, it depends how much noise people make about cartridges and what the company’s design team says. If the company thinks it will boost sales they’ll use them, otherwise it depends on what the design team and the accountancy team say.

          • WIth one caveat:
            They made them too small.
They should have artificially made them at least GBA cart size.

          • It will depend on how the technology evolves.

I also prefer cartridges (larger ones though, not tiny tiny ones), but if they go for disks again they should do a gamecube style slot – passing a disk to my wii for it to ‘eat’ always unnerved me.

          • Not just that, but there’s no way to tell how far in it’s supposed to go before eating it so it often tries to snatch it before your ready.

Also no way to check if there’s a disk in there without powering it.
With a GC you just lift the lid.

  3. Hey everyone, long time no see! Finally got a job, actually earning money now (it’s great).

Haven’t played Pokemon much after my Dunsparce run… thinking about doing some shiny hunting tonight. Not sure what to hunt for… probably one in SunMoon. The only one I’ve caught in Alola so far is a Cubone (A-Marowak is great) that I named Indigo. I really want a shiny Lapras, but Perish Song…

      • I might have to, but I’ve been so lazy… I still want a shiny Dunsparce and I hatched a few hundred eggs and then got bored. One day, perhaps. Another one I want is a shiny Rockruff. I’ve SOS chained for those numerous times. I’ve got the shiny charm and everything.

          • Yeah, it definitely has advantages. I have a competitive-ish shiny Houndoom in a Moon Ball from that (12 eggs woot!).
I remembered that I have some Master Balls in case I go after that Lapras. I can paralyze it and the caller, and catch it that way.

          • Nice! Moon Ball Houndoom is a good choice. I wish you could breed master balls onto things, but I guess that would defeat the purpose of them :/
