Lucario to Return to Smash Bros

Lucario was announced today as a returning character in Super Smash Bros: Wii U / 3DS. This is a great surprise with the recent release of Pokémon X and Y. I personally thought Lucario would have been up for removal for a generation six Pokemon (not to say that they won’t add another one, though), but its great to see it return to the series!

In the previous installment, Lucario’s “aura” grew stronger as his damage meter grew higher. Sakurai explains that this feature will be enhanced in the next installment of Smash Bros, which makes Lucario’s strength “a force to be reckoned with”. It will be interesting to learn how his aura effects the battle field and, as a Lucario user, how his play style will change.

Earlier today I had the pleasure to have an in-person discussion regarding this announcement with some of the Pokéjungle staff today and we were throwing some ideas around about Lucario’s addition to the Smash roster. Our speculation is that his final smash this time around will be his mega evolution instead of “Aura Blast”. He could be faster, stronger, and much more difficult to K.O which in his Mega Lucario state. I think they should even give it an expanded move-set in addition to a strength buff. Perhaps a longer range aura or added bounce effect to his moves. Also this will no doubt bring up speculation about Mewtwo and whether or not this news means he will not return as Lucario replaced him in the previous game and may do so for this one.

We’ll have to see what Sakurai has in store for us next with his rather elusive updates to Smash! I’m hoping for the return of another new Pokémon character (Pokemon Trainer with three new starters. . .?! A guy can dream, right?).

What do you hope for in the next Smash update? A new Pokémon Character? Some Metroid or Starfox love, perhaps? We’d love to here what you think!

  1. I’m glad Lucario is back with what looks like the same moveset! He was my main fighter in Brawl so I’m used to him. As far as other Pokemon I think Mewtwo or even Charizard could still be a possibility. Each could have their X Mega on the Wii U and their Y Mega on the 3DS, making it a cool version exclusive. On a side note, the Smash Bros. website always adds a comical screenshot with every new character. Lucario is no exception xD

  2. Lucario is one of my fave characters to use in SSBB (along with Olimar and Kirby)
His moves are really good and that Aura ‘ability’, soooo good
Hopefully he’ll get access to his mega so he can crush souls

  4. Well, I haven’t been here in a while. But great news for smash! But to be honest, it looks like the same old luke from brawl :/. I was hoping for a moveset tweak. The new characters seems more interesting than the old ones, because they appear to have the same exact move set from brawl. I do hope that changes.

  5. Please don’t hate me for this, but I’m mixed on him returning… I’ve never liked how much attention he’s gotten for being the Gen. 4 poster boy, and him returning just seems… wrong in my eyes… Don’t get me wrong though, I like Lucario and I’m glad he’s returning, but something doesn’t seem right for me =/

    • Well like you said, Lucario was Gen 4’s Poster Child but he was insanely popular in the eyes of the public, a bipedal Jackal that can fight and send blasts of personal energy is a like in my book, also his popularized movie roles and episodes furthered his popularity, and even forwarding his veteran Smash Bros Status is his history of first Mega Evolved Pokemon
So his return to the Smash Roster was inevitable

      • For a while a lot of people thought Lucario would be a legendary, mainly because it was in the Lucario and The Legend of Mew movie. The hype about it died down after was revealed that it was a second form pokemon.

  6. I find it funny that they have yet to confirm Ness, Captain Falcon or Jigglypuff. They’re all originals!

On a side note, I really hope Hawlucha makes some appearance. A playable character is doubtful, but maybe a Pokeball.

  7. I can honestly say I’ve never owned a Smash Bros. game. I’m glad they’re making one for 3DS. It’ll be more convenient to play.

  8. FINALLY, my luck has turned around. I bred 3 whole boxes of Gligars to get just to get 5IVs w/ Immunity then only hatched 3 Kangaskhans to get 5IVs. I just hope the same goes for Chansey…

  9. Last night I randomly decided to research jackals before going to bed. Then I, for no apparent reason, wake up early this morning. I check the Smash Bros. site (covering the screen in case there’s a new character reveal) and see the “Challenger Approaching” banner, so I excitedly click it. I see a light blue background and think, “Yep, here it is, Palutena!” I uncover the screen and all I can say is “…What?” Lucario was literally the character I least expected to come back. I really hope that Mewtwo still returns like many of us were hoping! Also, this makes me think that maybe they did in fact replace PT with a new one with a Gen. VI team, as otherwise I’d think they’d reveal him before Lucario. My one hope for Lucario in this game is that he now has his Mega Evolution for his Final Smash. This was quite the unexpected update, but it only makes me all the more excited to see what other surprises are in store for the Smash Bros. fans of the world. (And for the record, if Mewtwo doesn’t return my runner-up choice for the fifth Pokémon rep. is Blaziken. I know you were all dying to know that, so you’re welcome.)

  10. I felt bored of my old name and avatar, and decided to make a new one. I am no longer Commander A. Cheez, but I am FrostByte! (cause I like Ice types)

  11. Ok downloaded Final Fantasy 9 because it was only £3.59 on PSN… Which is really cheap for a game this good, in fact all of them are £3.59 lol…

  12. A lot of people seem to think that Lucario’s return means that other pokemon like mewtwo won’t be present in the upcoming game. I, however, humbly disagree, as both of the characters are different enough to merit playability.
