Mr.Bojingles’ 2014 Pokémon Wishlist

Happy New Year, PokéJungle fans! I hope everyone had a fantastic wrap up of 2013 and a great start to 2014. With a new year brings new challenges, new changes, and perhaps. . .new Pokémon games?!

We’ve run into the tradition of always having a third installment of the current generation with even a few remakes thrown into the mix. Nintendo keeps each generation’s third installment release normally between 1-2 years from when the initial game came out. If Nintendo continues to follow this pattern, we could possible see a new game as early as December of this year (although I think this is highly unlikely). Whether or not a new game is even released in the near future, I’m hoping that Nintendo brings about some changes to existing Pokémon and game mechanics. There are a few things that I think Nintendo/Game Freak have waited far too long to change. Below is my list of top three things that I hope Game Freak changes by the end of 2014:
WISH #1

The improvement of ice types

abomasnow aurorus glaceon

For real, Game Freak. Ice types are easily one of the worst types in the game. Its weaknesses, fire, rock, and steel, are all so common in the metagame that it’s difficult to properly use an ice type without a threatening 1HKO. Being strong against dragon, grass, ground, and flying types does have incredible perks as many Pokémon of these types are used consistently throughout the game. However, what the ice type really lacks are solid Pokémon to use in teams. There are a number of notable exceptions such as Cloyster, Weavile, Avalugg, Abomasnow, and Mamoswine, but they simply don’t cut it in the metagame to last very long in battle. I think that ice types need a Pokémon like Beartic, but with much higher speed (something around 80) in order to sweep. Also, ice types contain very few viable physical moves. Icicle Crash is a great move, but not learned by many Pokémon. Avalanche is only useful if you are the second to attack, which is extremely risky as ice types lack decent bulky physical attackers (with the exception of Regice). Ice Shard is a fantastic priority move that is thankfully learned by many Pokémon, which is important as ice types don’t have too many quick physical sweepers going for them. Ice Punch is another viable move that can be taught to loads of ice types and non-ice types alike, but is often replaced for something with more “oomph” and type coverage like Thunder Punch or Fire Punch.

Overall, ice types should be changed by adding better Pokémon suited for battle, better type coverage, or a more diverse move pool. Hopefully we can see some of these changes in the coming games!

WISH #2

Beginning bug types don’t suck

weedle caterpie

Let’s get serious. Every single introduction bug type was, and still is, horrible. They are normally completely outclassed after what, maybe the second gym? By then you have access to so many better teammates than the bugs you find in the beginning routes. Each and every bug type at the beginning of the game has an extremely low BST, terrible typing, and fairly limited movepools. It would be great to see a bug type that was actually useful past the beginning of the game. Sewaddle, if you can consider that an introduction bug type Pokémon (and it’s pushing it, as you don’t find one until a bit later in the game), is by far the best beginning bug type of them all. Vivillion has seemed to be getting a lot of attention because it is actually not half bad. . .in theory. It does receive access to Quiver Dance, Draining Kiss, Hurricane, and the interesting signature move Powder, but its mediocre speed and attack limit it from doing anything other than getting 1HKO by a rock move. In order for Vivillion to be useful in any form, you’ll need to set up with at least one Quiver Dance. If you can manage that without dying, you might get lucky and KO a few Pokemon, but it can easily be walled by a fire type or destroyed via a priority move.

If Game Freak is going to make a decent intro bug type, I would love for it to be only bug and have solid speed to back up a decent offense. Heck, even a bulky bug that resembles a horned beetle would be pretty interesting. Maybe in the near future we’ll see some improvements!

WISH #3

Overdue evolutions

farfetchd dunsparce

Can we just take a second to agree that Pokémon such as Farfetch’d, Dunsparce, Jynx, Lapras, and so many other Pokémon that haven’t changed much since their generation should get some form of evolution, whether it be mega or otherwise? I really enjoyed the mega evolutions of Pinsir and Heracross as it brings something new and interesting to previously unused Pokémon. I understand that there was only so much that Game Freak could do in one installment, but hopefully in the coming games these Pokémon will receive something to make them more viable in metagame use. They each have such great potential in battle, but unfortunately don’t make the cut as they have not adapted to the rapid changes in the Pokémon series. Dunsparce and Farfetch’d, well, just needs better overall stats. I can imagine Farfetch’d being a speedy physical sweeper (flying/fighting, anyone?) and Dunsparce being some sort of bulky wall with a mixed typing (Fairy would be a great addition to the Pokémon). Lapras and Jynx I imagine would have some sort of mega evolution. I can imagine Lapras being a special wall as it already has high HP and SpDef. Jynx is a fantastic candidate for a fast special sweeper. It’s interesting typing and access to the signature move Lovely Kiss give it great utility in battle. The only thing really hindering it is its absolutely crippling defense and HP stat, which make it very easy to 1HKO, even with a move with normal effectiveness.
These are my personal wishes for the “upcoming” game that we may or may not hear about this year. What are your wishes for the new generation of Pokémon? Do you think that we’ll see any form of improvements that I mentioned? Different changes, perhaps? Leave your feedback and comments below! Happy New Year, everyone.

  3. Going on what skiddo said.. what about a region where some pokemon evolve into different forms than in other regions like a sligoo evolves into a Drumadoo or whatever.. the region would have to be far away..

  4. We have loads of Rainy routes, Sandstorm routes, Hailing routes…..but no sunny routes apart from when Groudon is around….

    • Gamefreak should consider implementing “today’s forecast” on future games. By talking to the TV or something. Some days the town you in looks gloomy, some days the sun is shining bright…

I mean they already covered day/night, seasons. The sun has to come at some point.

      Reply
      • It’s never sunny cos Groudon forbids the sun to be out without his permission…Arceus who? If Groudon wants sun there will be sun, if not …..too freaking bad

      • But seriously though….a weather forecast feature would be pretty awesome…I would like if the weather was dynamic, and actually changed while you were on the field. Going from rainy to windy e.t.c
Maybe from rain to sun,and you can see rainbows and stuff

  6. In my OPINION, I think Sinnoh with it’s Time/Space theme and many others easily had a big plot potential. If Sinnoh’s anime were to continue, the movies and plot structure the team would have gone with would be amazing. As anime goes, each Season is either separated into smaller parts called Arcs. IF the Sinnoh Arcs were to continue, the anime would have been by far one of the best.

-Hunter J actually surviving the crash, mind has become a tool for war
-Cyrus in the New World, trying to conquer it
-Team Galactic revived by the Scientist
    -Tobias’ past is revealed
-Dawn’s bond with Saturn and Mars get’s stronge

And more! Heck, since Sinnoh’s theme is relatable to Hoenn’s, why not combine the two?

    • I wanna know why through Kanto through Unova pokes get the “time and space” summary when transfered through Bank, it seems so dialga/palkia related.

I’d drop dead crying if Nintendo hit us completely left field and put Hoenn & Sinnoh in the same games.

      • The reason is simple; Sinnoh made the biggest impact apart from the Originals. Although most would disagree and categorize Hoenn and Sinnoh together.

    • You sure love sinnoh! To this day, I have yet to love a region more than others, and I started with gen 1. I think all the regions have their flaws and good points, none really speak out to me more :/

      Reply
      • I ABSOLUTELY ADORE Sinnoh. If I could live in a region it would have be either Sinnoh/Unova/or Kalos. MY BIG THREE. (SOON TO BE BIG FOUR WITH HOENN BEING ADDED).

    • Sinnoh is amazing and while i want a sinnoh remake let wait for hoeen to have one and sinnoh have its remakes on a new and better console

  7. Umm? Why is it that Gen. 5 gets so much hate? It tried to be different in Pokemon designs, and appeal to the American audience… It sold very well, the plot was amazing, and the sequels were like Emerald on steroids…

  9. Name 1 time you read something Pokemon related that actually scared you.

For me, it was during the playthrough of 5th gen where one of the NPC’s talk about Kyurem eating humans! I was actually terrified of meeting the thing. Laughed when I encountered it lol.

  11. The only reason why I rarely get into talks about Hoenn is because… DRUM-ROLL… I wasn’t even born during it’s release…

      • The best in my opinion was Hoenn… i don’t blame Unova’s anime i didn’t like Sinnoh either… i guess Hoenn was so good once it stopped nothing was like it

        Reply
        • I dont get it. What makes Hoenn so good to everyone? Yes the first game i played was ruby, but still, i found nothing exceptional about hoenn. I love all POkemon, but it just seems that i always have an opposite opinion to everyone else. ;/

          • Being a hipster is terrible tho. Everyone hates your opinion, and when you vocalize a different opinion, you have no kin spirits. its irritating sometimes

          • Oh i always though being a hipster was “cool” i tried to be a hipster before but it never works, like i tried telling myself i like Bulbasaur and i dislike Lugia… it didn’t work because deep down i i love squirtle and love Lugia

          • Yeah. I like all three gen 1 starters, and i prefer Ho-oh for some reason. Its unintentional, but overly hyped, and overly popular things just turn me away.

          • Well i guess that is bad when you think about it, but i hope you embrace this don’t let most of the world’s opinion affect yours.

          • Each individual is entitled to their own opinions and I think what other people deem to be good may not be to your liking. EMBRACE YOUR OPINION BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT MAKES YOU SPECIAL. Be benevolent. At least you aren’t like other people who always follow and not lead.

          • To each their own honestly. In my opinion Hoenn had the 3 best starters, the best legendaries, a good number of Pokemon that really appealed to me, and the anime was well paced….and had a satisfactory ending.

          • I look at everything equally, but somethings just change that equality. Gen 3 and 4 focused WAY too much on the girls and their contest bull to me, while Iris had no goals that interrupted Ash’s travels. And MIsty… worst female character, and i dont understand what everyone sees in her. i respect everyones opinion, but dont understand the,m

          • May was my favourite female companion, but Dawn just annoyed me a lot, Misty am impartial about, and for Iris I have no words. I liked how contest were introduced as it was something new and interesting to me at least, but Sinnoh made them very stale for some reason…

          • mhmm. I found may too arrogant, and her fighting with max was unneccesary to em. I just prefered Unova because it was slow paced yes, but it had much better animation, and no five thousand episodes of contests, only for the anti climatic ending of the grand festival. THat just blew

          • May fighting with Max is realistic no? I thought siblings tend to argue so that’s what made those little moments for me. And in my opinion May was anything but arrogant, she didn’t even want to start on her journey because she wasn’t fond of Pokemon, regardless of the fact that the she was a Gym Leaders kid. In my opinion she became an amazing battler because of the support of her friends and family, and this is suuported further by the fact that her Torchic eventually fully evolved into a Blaziken (which I think suited her very well). Unova I had very high hopes but got put off it around 30 episodes in…I’m sorry but there was nothing that interested me enough to keep me around

          • True. I just couldn’t really stand may. Something about her, whether it be her fighting with max, or her incessant contest battles, and if she wasnt arrogant in hoenn, she definately was in sinnoh

          • Maybe….personally I didn’t see any arrogance…but then it depends what you’re looking for. Of course she would be more experienced and therefore more confident, whether that confidence comes across as arrogance is subjective…

          • Yeah, it came across as arrogance to me, but as someone who thinks that intense display of confidence is arrogance, i saw a lot of ash’s rivals as arrogant, especially paul, who was arrogant and dismissive
