After many years, Mega Evolution will be returning to the main Pokémon series. Pokémon Legends: Z-A will be bringing back previously introduced Mega Evolutions and also adding new ones. When a Pokémon Mega Evolves, its appearance changes and it gains substantial power. They may also change type, which can be used to your advantage.
How to Mega Evolve a Pokémon in battle

In order to Mega Evolve your Pokémon, you must have obtained the Key Stone which is worn by the trainer and a Pokémon’s Mega Stone.

Mega Evolution differs in Legends: Z-A from the mechanics we previously saw in Pokémon X and Pokémon Y. In the lower-right-hand corner of the screen, you’ll see a Mega Evolution gauge if you are using a Pokémon able to Mega Evolve. Once it is filled up completely, you’ll be able to Mega Evolve your Pokémon for a short time before it will revert to its non-Mega Evolved state.
Due to Mega Evolution being a timed power boost and not a permanent state for the duration of the battle like X and Y, players are no longer locked into using only one Mega Evolution in battle. If you have multiple Pokémon able to Mega Evolve, you can switch out and Mega Evolve with any of them freely.
How to get Mega Stones
In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, there are three primary ways to get new Mega Stones in order to be able to Mega Evolve their respective Pokémon: purchasing them outright from stores like the Stone Emporium, exchanging Mega Shards and calming Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon.
Exchange Mega Shards for Mega Stones

Throughout Lumiose City are Mega Crystals. You can use your Pokémon to break them and get Mega Shards, which can then be traded for Mega Stones at the Quasartico Inc. headquarters.
Calm Rogue Mega-Evolved Pokémon

The Rogue Mega Evolution phenomenon is plaguing Lumiose City and Mega-Evolved wild Pokémon are wreaking havoc because they can’t control their power. Challenging these Pokémon and pacifying them can reward Mega Stones.
