Pokémon GO makes changes ahead of Gigantamax Gengar batles

Players have had a difficult time challenging Gigantamax Pokémon in Max Battles in Pokémon GO, but Niantic is making some changes that should make things a bit more manageable ahead of Gigantamax Gengar’s debut in Max Battles. It is part of the second half of GO‘s Halloween event and will be able to be found in six-star Max BattlesOctober 31 at 10:00 a.m. to November 3, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. local time.

Upcoming changes to Gigantamax Gengar Max Battles

Niantic has outlined changes on their support account which include the following:

  • Gigantamax Gengar Max Battles will still be challenging, but we will be slightly reducing the difficulty compared to Gigantamax Venusaur, Charizard, and Blastoise Max Battles.
  • Defeating Gigantamax Gengar will reward participating trainers 25k Stardust each.
  • Gigantamax Gengar will be more easy to catch once you have defeated it in a Max Battle.

It remains to be seen if these changes will remain for all Gigantamax Pokémon in the future or there will be further changes based on Gigantamax Gengar Max Battle results.

While some of these changes are a step in the right direction to ease fan frustrations, it may not make the battles significantly better. Fans have argued that the large number of players needed locally excludes rural players and, even in more populated areas, can make it difficult to coordinate or drum up interest.

Players have also expressed bugs during raids and difficulty with mechanics such as dodging which were not mentioned in the updates.
