Pokémon GO brings in the balloons

Team GO Rocket hot-air balloons, that is. Niantic has rolled out a new update for Pokémon GO. Players will get a chance to battle a grunt, or event a GO Rocket leader, every few hours. Check out the official details below the trailer.

Mysterious balloons have popped up in the sky, and the culprit is Team GO Rocket! With these Team GO Rocket balloon invasions, you can now battle Team GO Rocket anywhere on the map. We ask that you keep an eye out for balloons in the sky and battle the Team GO Rocket Grunts and Leaders piloting them. Who knows—you may even find Giovanni! Reports show that they appear once every few hours, but could appear more often during takeovers.

1. Tap a balloon to battle Team GO Rocket: Be ready for a challenge! Tap a Team GO Rocket balloon, pick your battle party, and defeat Team GO Rocket to rescue their Shadow Pokémon. Team GO Rocket balloons will hover near you for a limited time, so be sure to check the map for balloons and tap them before they fly away!

2. Equip your Rocket Radar to encounter balloons with Team GO Rocket Leaders: When you have a Rocket Radar equipped, you can find Sierra, Cliff, or Arlo piloting a Team GO Rocket balloon.

3. Equip your Super Rocket Radar to encounter Giovanni: It appears that even the boss of Team GO Rocket himself can be found riding in a Team GO Rocket balloon! If you activate and equip a Super Rocket Radar, Giovanni’s balloon is certain to appear.

Turns out, Professor Willow and the team leaders were on to something when they discovered those scraps of paper! With Team GO Rocket flying across the world of Pokémon GO, we’ll need as many of you as possible to help defeat them! Keep an eye out for these Rocket balloons, and continue to train. Hopefully this will be the extent of their mischief and they’ll surrender now before we have to prepare for more fights. But just in case…we might have to revisit the original plan for the GO Fest Weekly Challenge: Battle Timed Research. Stay tuned for more updates on what that Timed Research will now entail, as well as the accompanying battle-themed event.

This is definitely helpful if you’re not able to get out to a PokéStop that’s been taken over. You can still regularly battle Team GO Rocket now and keep catching Shadow Pokémon! Let us know what you think in the comments or on Discord!

  1. Updates on me:
-The Isle of Dream Land’s finally forever resident has moved in, welcome Deli

-I got Swanna and Heatmor in Go and I found a shiny Growlithe which is now an Arcanine

-Bought the K.K. Slider trio amiibo set for $20 on the boardwalk (I mean that was fair pricing cause Lottie was $25 alone and Blathers was $15 and both of those were singles)

  2. Yesterday I dreamt the Crown Tundra DLC introduced a new feature with the unintuitive name of “Galar-in-One” that allows you to change which Pokéball your Pokémon is stored in by sacrificing a Berry.
Basically you when you use this feature it plays an animation of your Pokémon being lured out of the Pokéball by a Berry, eating the Berry, and then the player putting the Pokémon inside a new chosen Pokéball.

It was a weird thing to dream about (and I guess it’s because I read about players that used a Dream Ball Aegislash and something else Porygon in competitions without any consequences despite the hacks), but it would be cool if GF introduced a way for you to change your Pokémon’s Pokéball for players that take this kind of thing more seriously.

  3. So I’m going to be doing my very first nuzlocke challenge using Soul Silver! Right now I’ve got a level 6 totodile named Chomper and I do believe I understand the rules of the challenge where I must release a mon once it faints but I’m going to just box them and I must catch the first mon I encounter in a brand new route. Because I dont have any pokeballs yet I’m going to not count the hoot-hoots I’ve seen already on route 29 going to Cherrygrove. I’m also adding the rule for myself that I can only use native Johto mons or any kanto mon that gets a Johto evolution like Zubat. Also adding the rule that I get to catch another mon if I’ve already caught the first one I encounter. Wish me luck!
