Starter Showdown 2015: Generation One

Starter Showdown was an idea we’ve had for the site for a little while, but was never really sure of the best way to run the feature, but today we’re excited to finally kickstart the series! The idea is simple: every 5 days we will hold a poll in which we ask you, the readers vote for your favourite starter Pokémon. We’ll run through the starters one generation at a time, then we’ll hold a final vote before the end of the year to find out who really is the best starter. This time around we’ll only be selecting starter Pokémon that are available to pick in the main series of Pokémon games (the Pokémon you receive at the start of the game).

You can pick your favourite by voting in the polls on the site and Twitter. At the end of the voting period, we’ll add up all the votes, publish a results post and get started on the next round!

Generation One: 29th November – 3rd December
Generation Two: 3rd December – 7th December
Generation Three: 7th December – 11th December
Generation Four: 11th December – 15th December
Generation Five:  15th December – 19th December
Generation Six: 19th December – 23rd December

Final round: 23rd December – 30th December

  7. I’m always so conflicted when it comes to the first starters…..I really like both Charmander and Squirtle’s lines, but Charmander was my first gen 1 starter in Red…..On the other hand I typically go for the water starters…….*sigh* idk…….lol

      • One of the things that pushes me towards Squirtle sometimes is that I’m getting kind of bored of Charizard lol

        P.S. For the record I chose Squirtle in my Y(main game of the 2) play through and loved having him on my team lol

  9. I just watched this Verlisify video (slanderous, I know) from way back in March that brought up a very interesting quote I wasn’t previously aware of. After ORAS were announced, Masuda said in an interview, “There’s been a lot of demand from people to remake Ruby/Sapphire on social media, for example…right now felt like a really good time to do it, and INSTEAD OF DOING A DIRECT SEQUEL TO X/Y we’re tying it together in some unique ways”. He basically confirmed that ORAS is going to be the last 6th generation game, considering how it adds Mega Evolutions and elements that would have been added in a Z version. This means that I no longer think we’re getting a new Kalos game. This brings closure as well, because no company would be insane enough to launch a whole campaign around Zygarde and not announce a new game…for two months. Unless I’m completely wrong about this, I think Zygarde’s forms are spinoff-only. Pokemon did reference the forms as “Animation news”, as well, instead of just a flat-out new Pokemon reveal like Keldeo before Black and White.

    This means that I think next year we could be getting 7th Gen. It would explain the unusual gap this year, which has probably been used to
    develop tons of new Pokemon and features (such as integrating Pokemon GO). In an interview, JM answered this question: “Where do you see the FUTURE of the franchise going? New remakes like ORAS? More original games like X/Y?” He said, “When you consider the new technology that’s always evolving – for instance, going from the link cable to worldwide communication – what I think won’t change is the focus on the play being not just in-game but OUTSIDE THE HOME AS WELL. That definitely won’t change. With whatever will come, we’ll always challenge ourselves to leverage that and find new ways to INTRODUCE Pokemon or trade them. There will always be a challenge to evolve the series IN TANDEM with the change in technology.” What I get from this is that Pokemon GO (what he is obviously referring to) is going to work in tandem with the next generation (which was referenced during its reveal as “future mainline games”). It could also introduce new Pokemon through Pokemon GO that can be ported to said 7th generation games, revolutionizing the series.

    The only flaw in this theory is Volcanion, which has not been revealed yet. I imagine that it will be revealed in next month’s CoroCoro, along with Movie 19 news. I’m sure it could still come out next year without conflicting with the 7th Generation.

    • Although I can understand people jumping on the 7th Gen wagon it makes me kind of sad…….Kalos was such an interesting region and it’s a shame that XY spent so much time referencing Kanto instead of focusing fully on Kalos alone with only small hints at Kanto or whatever….If there’s no new Gen 6 game I won’t b mad, but I will b a little disappointed that they didn’t at least try to make Kalos more worth while……That said new generations are always fun so either way I’ll b happy!! lol

    • The anime has always been a marketing tool for the games.
      There’s no way they would make fledged out zygarde forms just to make than anime only.
      And besides,there’s a lot of stuff we don’t know yet

    • The thing about Volcanion is that it doesn’t matter which is disappointing. However it will probably be a farewell to Kalos, the most disappointing region. They’ll likely announce and release a new game next year like they did with ORAS. Unless of course gen 7 is tied into gen six.

  12. Awh man. The one thing that really gets on my nerve about SMD is that they didn’t implement Hidden Abilities. They implemented move tutor moves, so why not hidden abilities? Now Sylveon and Greninja are pretty much useless -_-

  16. RE PJT15: While I don’t like to say it, I’m unfortunately not going to be able to run the tournament this year. I just don’t have the time to organise it and run it.

    In early 2016 I’ll runna series of polls to find out what you guys want from the tournament and when the best time to run it will be.

    So, yeah! I’m sorry to have left you all in the dark, but let’s get ready to make PJT16 the best yet!
