This comes late because I am currently wrapping up a trip, but I still thought it was worth posting about because of the implications it has for Pokémon fans. During a Nintendo policy briefing it was announced that the next console, successor to the Nintendo Switch, would be compatible with Switch games and the Nintendo Switch Online service. The company later provided the same information in a tweet, which is embedded below.
With the Switch being home to a number of main Pokémon RPGs and spin-off titles, this is very welcome news for players hoping to continue playing on the next console, just like when the Nintendo DS’s successor the Nintendo 3DS was revealed and it could still play games from the previous console.
One lingering concern that has been brought up is whether this is truly full backwards compatibility for physical game cartridges or a less-than-ideal situation in which only digital games will be able to be carried over. I would hope this would not be the case but the statement did not give exact details. Personally, I think it will have compatibility with physical cartridges or Nintendo would have been more nuanced in their communication.
