Pokémon Dream Radar is staged in an area called the Dream Rift. You play the role of a researcher working under Professor Burnette to help find Pokémon.

You use a specialist machine to locate Dream Clouds by moving the 3DS camera about your surroundings. When a Dream Cloud gives off a reaction, face your 3DS camera towards it and shoot.

Shooting a pink cloud causes Dream Balls to appear. The parts that you use to capture Pokémon can be upgraded with these Dream Balls, doing such things as increasing your beam’s strength, giving you more time to capture Pokemon and so on. You can also use dream balls to collect three different kinds of ‘Support Goods’ which aid you in capturing Pokémon.
A black cloud has a chance of containing an item or a Pokémon. When a shining orb appears, you’ll have to use your beam to catch it before the time runs out.
Clouds will replenish themselves at a rate of 1 every 5 minutes, even when the software isn’t in use. You can also use 5 3DS game coins up to 3 times a day to completely fill up your Search Scope to it’s maximum number of clouds.

A majority of Pokémon obtainable in the Dream Radar will have their alternate abilities and will appear between level 5 and 40, depending on your number of gym badges.

Capturing the exclusive Therian formes of Tornadus, Thundurus & Landorus is the main objective of the game.
