Focus On: Gym Leaders! (Part I)

Hey loyal Pokejunglers!

Sorry it’s been such a while! Long story short; I moved back to Seattle with just my Dad (My parents didn’t divorce), and he doesn’t really ‘believe’ in the internet for the reasons I use it for (Like he calls PJN a waste of time. How wrong is he?) So I’ve had very limited access to the internet for the past month or so. So once again, I apologize from the bottom of my heart for my absence! I’m going to try my best to post as often as I can! But now that I’m back in the states hopefully I’ll see some of you guys around? But enough of me, I present to you the long-awaited continuation of the ‘Focus On’ series! Here is Part I to our Focus On: Gym Leaders!

You know what to do, click it hard.

And there we have it! That’s the first half of Unova’s Gym Leaders! If I didn’t already make it clear this is Part I of II, our second installment will feature the rest of Gym Leaders! So now that you’ve read this I want to hear your opinions! Maybe you think I bashed too much on a certain Gym Leader? Possibly that I gave it to much love? Maybe you disagree with the difficulty level, or maybe you agree! Whatever your opinion may be, voice it and comment down below!

It’s good to be back. icon smile Focus On: Gym Leaders! (Part I)ozymandis

P.S. PJ is leaving for Japan tomorrow! Give your Best Wishes! (Gotta love ‘em puns)

Competitive Focus: Shandera

Whats up people!  This is NL, bringing you a “heads up” on developing 5th Gen competitive battling strategies!

609 ani Competitive Focus: Shandera

Now, before we get started, a few things to address- I’m a Competitive Battling Player, and I’ve been playing in Japan for almost a year now.In Japan, a regular battle is a Lv.50 Flat battle with six pokemon, and you choose three, with no legendaries or semi-legendaries(like Zapdos.) Also I know there’s a lot of buzz going on about how this pokemon might ruin everything or something.  It’s OK.  This pokemon isn’t really as strong as its stats look.  While we’re at it, lets look at what we have:

  • HP: 60
  • Atk: 55
  • Def: 90
  • Sp Atk: 145
  • Sp Def: 90
  • Spd: 80

In terms of fire type, it has the second highest special attack among all, only losing to Reshiram by 5 points.  It can usually withstand Stone Edges and Earthquakes from different types of pokemon.  Sounds like the most strongest and most intimidating monster you’ve ever heard of? Think again.  It is good against super effectives, but when it comes down to the big boys like Garchomp, Salamence and all the elite, uber, and almost uber pokemon, it won’t stand up to the heat.  Also, as high as it’s Sp Atk may be, there are still pokemon out there that can take hits from it.  Another thing is that it’s really weak to focus sash.  It will usually withstand a hit, but if the opponent has a Focus Sash and the opponent is faster, there’s really nothing you can do (that is usually the case for any pokemon, but Shandera is one that is weaker than others).  This is where the Choice Scarf comes into play, but I’ll talk about that later.  Yes, its Dream Ability is strong, but it doesn’t really change much.  It is helpful though (plus Unova pokemon with Dream Abilities won’t be released for now, the only pokemon available are Hihidaruma, and Mushaana).

Doesn’t sound convincing?  Then you’ll just have to wait for the game to hit the other countries and see for yourself.  So, shall we get into those fancy movesets (they’re in the spoiler tag, pretty long)?

Well, that about does it! you’ve got five movesets for a brand-new pokemon, from a Japanese Competitive Battling Player! Hope you guys enjoyed it, comments are welcome and appreciated!

Competitive Focus: Zoroark

Hey guys, Jonny here! So I have been thinking about starting a set of competitive battle strategy articles for the 5th gen. So without further ado let’s get them started!

571 ani Competitive Focus: Zoroark

I’ll start off with the first 5th generation pokemon revealed, and one of my favorites, Zoroark. With base speed of 105 and a special attack of 120 *plus* a fairly diverse movepool zoroark can be an impressive sweeper.

  • Ability: Illiusion – Zoroark’s abilty though intresting isnt that helpful in battle unless you get lucky and it causes an opponent to switch.
  • Item: Life Orb
  • Nature: Modest
  • EVs: Sp Atk – 252 / Speed – 252 / HP – 6
  • Night Burst
  • Focus Blast
  • Flamethrower
  • Hidden Power [Psychic]

The idea here is to hit things hard without having to set up.  Night burst zoroark’s main stab move takes care of ghost and psychic, while also hitting any other pokemon pretty hard if it switches in.  Focus blast helps take care of pesky special walls like Blissey.  Flamethrower is for any bug or steel switch in’s. Watch out for Shandera and Heatran.  Lastly HP (Psychic) is for Fighting types like the ‘all mighty’ Roopushin.  Be careful when battling against them (or many other fighting types) as they can be equipped with mach punch and can OHKO Zoroark.

Switching in on a psychic is your best bet seeing how Zoroark is immune to any psychic moves it carries.  Wait to see if the opponent is scarfed or banded in anyway and switch in on a move that won’t hurt zoroark too badly, seeing how zoroark’s defense and special defense aren’t the best.

Because zoroark is one of my favorite 5th generation pokemon I’m glad to see its stats are decent.  What do you guys think.?  Any other moveset you believe would work?  Leave it in the comments below and tell me what you think about zoroark as far as competive battling.  Hope you guys enjoyed!

-Jonny

PJ’s Note: Jonny is our fearless mod over in Chat who takes care of dealing with the hordes of anons that sometimes hop into it :3

Starters Untamed: Johto

profelm 148x300 Starters Untamed: Johto

Good day PJ readers! I just want to start off saying thank you for such great feedback that was given on my previous article on the Gen I starters. It was more of a success than I initially thought, and I’m very grateful of your insights! And due to some requests I’ll be completing the rest of the starters and go from there. Each Pokémon has their own sets of uses in competitive play, so the amount of talk and debate surrounding this topic is pretty in depth.  Read it all after the break!
