CoroCoro June 2012 Speculation

images 300x111 CoroCoro June 2012 Speculation

The scans of June’s CoroCoro issue will probably leak Friday or Saturday of this week, so it seems like a great time to talk about what we want to see!

More new gym leaders? An explanation for the movie and green screen pictures? Some hint as to the storyline?!

Let’s get a lively discussion going! Personally I’d like to see the rest of the map…

Unova: Frozen or Not?

Hello guys, pokejungle translator Kriffix here once again!

In just a few hours we will be having our usual live translation of Pokémon Smash right here.
We have been promised a demonstration of Keldeo in battle. What will this reveal? Who knows!
That’s why you have to be here to find out!

In the meantime however, I would like to draw your attention to this little old map…

img story 001 300x201 Unova: Frozen or Not?

There has been much debate as to whether Unova is actually frozen over or whether this is merely a ploy to conceal information. My initial interpretation is that it was in fact frozen over. That is how the original Japanese text from CoroCoro read to me. It was only when someone pointed out that that it specifically uses the word “map” (as opposed to region itself) that I began to feel there was room for the latter interpretation.
i
To me though, word choice of “frozen map” always felt like it was trying to scream “Frozen map that reflects the actual state of the Unova region”, after all isn’t that what maps do? Plus, Japanese is a language that omits things that are considered to be ‘a given’. (I.E the map is frozen therefore the region it represents is). It feels very redundant to say something like “Here is the frozen map of the frozen Unova region”. It’s just awkward and unnecessary.
i
Alas, the fact that I too speak English has caused me to become split between my initial interpretation and  the somewhat sterilised English translation.Something that may be of interest though, is that it only really seems to be the western side of the internet that is currently debating this. I have searched many Japanese threads and it took me a good 30 minutes to even find someone who questioned it being frozen.

What’s more interesting, is that the few people who are questioning it all seem to be focusing their posts on this single thread. Out of the hundreds of posts here, there is about 5 posts suggesting that it is not frozen, 3 of which seem to be the same person (judging by how he/she comes across) although they are all anonymous.
These 5 or so posts versus the couple of thousand or so that are simply saying something along the lines of “Wow, I wonder what happened to Unova!” (1,2,3,4 among others).

I can’t help but wonder if it would be wise of us to trust the opinions of those native in the language in which the map was originally presented.
i
Another big reason for it being frozen over is the fact that the Japanese texts claims that an “異変” has taken place. Many translators are simply treating this word to mean “change”, leaving it open to English readers to interpret it as ‘man-made changes that they want to hide’ (which of course are also present!).
However, this translation does not actually deliver the proper connotations that the original Japanese contains. It should in fact be translated something along the lines of “an abnormality” having occurred , or even “an accident”. This coupled with the verb “起こる”  meaning for some kind of accident to take place (as opposed to “起きる” which is simple neutral for “to happen”). The fact is, the nuance is that something big and out of human control has happened.
i
In contrast though, an argument for it not being frozen would be that the ice looks somewhat artificial. Though even then it’s important to bear in mind that this could be a matter of artistic expression. Perhaps it is merely trying to get across that this is the work of Kyurem by using the stylised ice that surrounds him on the game covers? What’s more, as always this  drawn map will not be the one in the actual game, it may not look so artificial later on. This may just be a way for them to get across one message, one very simple message that is something along the lines of : LOOK ICE EVERYWHERE!
i
I know a lot of you guys are convinced it is not frozen. And yes, that is darn-right possible. Therefore, my purpose in writing this article is to help you see the other side of the argument. Big thanks to pokejungle for letting me write something that is potentially quite risky since no doubt the masses will not like to hear it.
i
Feel free to post any thoughts or opinions below. Also don’t forget to vote for whether you think it’s frozen or not! icon smile Unova: Frozen or Not?

Mystery Bird Analysis & A Short Message From Pokémon Director/Co-Creator To Us All Here At PokéJungle

Januchi Masuda copy pokes01 300x201 Mystery Bird Analysis & A Short Message From Pokémon Director/Co Creator To Us All Here At PokéJungle

Hello guys,

PokéJungle translator Kriffix here. The internet has been a flurry with speculation on the silhouette shown in the pre-release screens for the Pokémon AR Searcher game that allows you to transfer Pokémon to Black 2 and White 2. Just what is this Pokémon?

Pokemon AR Searcher 21 300x162 Mystery Bird Analysis & A Short Message From Pokémon Director/Co Creator To Us All Here At PokéJungle

At first glance a lot of fans thought it was Ho-oh, and others like myself  believed it to be Archeops. However, no matter what pre-existing Pokémon you compare it to there is always a blaring difference that makes coming to a conclusion very difficult. The general consensus now is that it is an Articuno with it’s tail obscuring the head. However there are just two problems with this theory. The lumps on the wings are too round and the legs are too thick and short.

Having had the pleasure of meeting Pokémon game director and co-creator Jun’ichi Masuda during his visit to London, not to mention having spent the last two years subtitling a lot of his announcements, I decided to contact him regarding this mysterious bird-like Pokémon. He’s aware from our previous chat (albeit brief) of us here at PokéJungle and our loyal fans. I’ve not translated the unnecessary bits.
Kriffix:“…Just what is that bird-like Pokémon from the released AR Searcher pics? Is it a secret? “

Masuda:”Good morning! It’s been a long time since we last met! Oh, how perceptive of you! However I have to say ‘no comment’! (>_<)”

Dang. So basically we weren’t able to gather much from this, other than the fact it is something he cannot comment on. The possible reasons for this are as follows;
1.He does not want to spoil what Pokémon are obtainable in the game
2.Although Gamefreak now have some 3D designers and it may well in fact be them working on the game, he may not want to comment on work that is potentially done by ‘Creatures’ inc.
3.It’s a new Pokémon/form and so he can’t comment on it yet.

What do you guys think?

Just keep in mind that we may well have a new Pokémon/form announcement right round the corner. Last month’s CoroCoro says  ”新ポケモンスクープ”, which can be interpreted as either “scoop on a new Pokémon” or “a new scoop on Pokémon”. As well as “新ポケモンの発表” which can also be interpreted as either “announcement on new Pokémon” or “new announcement regarding Pokémon”. However, the average person reading and not thinking too deeply would assume the former, it would be pretty sneaky for CoroCoro to try to trick us like this.

Kriffix

PS. All this speculation of an unknown bird-Pokémon silhouette makes me all nostalgic. Perhaps some of the younger fans may not know what I’m talking about, but the words “Rainbow Bird” still have a special place in my heart. I’m sure some of you know what I’m talking about.

Black White 2 Second Trailer and Nintendo Direct Snippet (upd1)

The first video is the new trailer from the Nintendo Direct that we gave a live report on in the post below for Pokémon Black 2 and White 2. The second is a snippet from Nintendo direct showing the two new applications for the 3DS; the National Pokédex Pro and the Pokémon AR Searcher. The first one speaks for itself and the second one is an Augmented Reality game that lets you use the 3DS camera to catch Pokémon and then send them to Black2 and White 2. Naturally this has a lot of potential! Added a third video of the European Nintendo President confirming the ‘Pokédex Pro’ and ‘AR searcher’ for Europe. Not that there was any doubt, but its nice to know! A US announcement is no doubt right round the corner!

Make sure to stick with pokejungle for Pokémon Smash later on! We’ll be doing the usual live translations for you all!

CoroCoro Translation Nuggets [#6]

PokéJungle Translator Kriffix here once again. In just a few hours Pokémon Smash will air, hopefully supplying us with precious news! Masuda will also be making an appearance on the show and will be playing Pokémon Black 2/White 2 live!
In the mean time, whilst we wait for the all important announcement, I will update this post every 20 minutes or so with 6 “translation nuggets” from CoroCoro and the official Pokémon site which have not yet been translated elsewhere. Among these there are a few which other sites have overlooked but may turn out to be very important to the plot of BW2. Remember, you read it here first!

Technically not a translation but rather a focus. Who are this group of people wearing Black? Have team Plasma returned with a vengeance and a new get-up? The orange hair colour may suggest this.

Nuggets complete! If you enjoyed them let me know and I may do it again sometime!
