3DS Price Drop, Rumble Delay Makes Sense

The newest Nintendo handheld, the 3DS, will receive a substantial price drop on August 12th. The American price is being cut by $80, going from retail of $249.99 to $169.99 and Japanese price from ¥25,000 to ¥15,000. This drop is probably to spur on lagging sales and increase the console’s adoption rate. Will I get it now that it’s gone down in price? HELL YES.

Pokemon Rumble’s mysterious delay is also much more logical now that this has been announced. Console sales often spike when games for flagship franchises are released. I’m now thinking to get a 3DS and Scramble on Aug, if there are any in stock.

ps- If you already have a 3DS, or buy one BEFORE the 11th, you can get access to 10 free NES games and 10 GBA games before they’re released to the public. Isn’t worth $80 in my opinion :p Requires you to connect to the 3DS eShop wirelessly with your device on or before the 11th though!

  1. Hey, that’s my news! :(

And although I bought a 3DS day one, I’m happy that it gets a cut. At least I get a small compensation, so I have no need to rage, and more 3DS sold means more and better software being developped.

But the cut was MASSIVE and pretty fast. It’s DS vs. PSP all over again.

    • Vooks.net are reporting it’s going to be $249.95, which still means we’re getting screwed over. Cheaper to rely on importing.

  3. Oh, sure, now they cut the price. Got mine last month. Oh, well. Still worth every penny.

What’s this about 10 free NES games?

  4. Nvm, just read about it on Nintendo’s site. 20 free games just for buying a 3DS before the price drop? 10 of which the general public won’t be getting? Me like.

  5. Seeming that the GBC games are worth $9 in Australia, I’ll assume that the GBA ones will be $12,000,000. 10*$12,000,000 = good thing I bought mine at launch :P
The NES games only sweeten the deal.

  7. Of course they drop the price, but it comes with a catch. Do I buy a 3DS now and get a total of 20 free downloadable games or just buy the 3DS at the lowered price? Or I could just buy a used 3DS from Amazon and still get the free games? So many freakin’ choices.

And the official Nintendo of America said the price drop starts on August 12th, not the 11th. But you still have to buy one before the 11th though.

  12. Though I paid full price for mine, I oddly enough can’t bring myself to have any regrets about not waiting. Kudos to all of you that did, though. :D

  15. Apparently, Nintendo is selling the 3DS as a loss: http://nintendo3dsblog.com/nintendo-to-sell-3ds-at-a-loss

    …Does anyone have any idea what this means? ‘Cuz I don’t. >>;

  16. @jahu
It’s a ploy where selling more consoles at a loss means more game sales at a gain. The more people that have the machines, the more games that will be sold (especially with something like Mario Kart where heaps of people will buy it).
And I’m not sure if Iwata is being honest there. I’ve read reports that it’s only US$100 to build.

    • @aaron The parts cost 100$ dollar to make, so add in manufacturing, shipping, (the very expensive) R&D and ofcourse the wholeseller and retail want to make a profit.

  20. I don’t have to wait until Christmas now! :D I can either save up money from work (which I suck at doing, and with my pay it’d take forever), or convince my mum to buy me one (which should be easy, she loves buying me things).

  21. Pokejungle, you may want to update your post. For the embassador program(20 free games) you don’t have to sign up on the website. You just have to log onto the Nintendo eShop before ” 11:59 p.m. Eastern time on Aug. 11″. Just making sure you don’t confuse anyone with the post =D Thanks.

btw. Nice site update, ever think about putting a music widget up in the sidebar? Worked well for me.

  22. How we log in to Nintendo eShop, are we going to register or just open the eShop?

    • You just have to open up the eshop, apparently when you do that it “tags you” as an ambassador. So you should be fine as long as you open up the eShop. and do so browsing :P

  23. and you know what
i’m okay with 20 free games.
my 3DS already is getting tons of use and i only have one actual 3D game.

although that PSVita is looking really nice right now.
i’ll get that too after price drop / hackers give it emulation.
